Ransomware briefly knocks out The Weather Channel

The Weather Channel acknowledged Friday via Twitter that it had been attacked by “malicious software.” Other news outlets reported that the malware was ransomware.

The malware knocked The Weather Channel’s live morning show, AMHQ, off-air. After a few minutes, the channel was able to broadcast reruns of its show “Heavy Rescue.”

Behind the scenes, according to ZDNet, the channel’s IT staff scrambled to restore from system backups. In only 90 minutes the channel was able to resume it’s regular programming.
The Wall Street Journal reported the FBI is investigating.
