HIPAA redo? Organization sees new privacy laws in the future

As more states and members of Congress demand new privacy and cybersecurity regulations, The Information Technology and Innovation Fund seeks a unified approach.

“Let’s face it, HIPAA has not worked well: Healthcare providers see it as check the box situation and are not protecting IT systems as a result. We’re going to see the need arise (for a unified approach) as states push for [a federal privacy law]” an official with the technology think tank says in this article.

The article includes a link to ITIF.org’s 75-page position paper, which lays in detail what the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation thinks should be in a nationwide privacy law, including clearer privacy options for consumers.

But the paper also raises concern that anger over large and repeated breaches could lead to strict laws that stifle innovation.
